How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Two ways: measure by a piece of string or print a ring sizer gauge.

Unsure about your ring size?
These simple at-home methods will help you find your Ring size. You can either make a ring sizer with everyday items or print one out. While these methods are useful, a jeweller’s measuring tools and advice are more accurate. Visit us and get measured professionally when possible.

1. Make Your Own Ring Sizer:

All you’ll need is a piece of string, yarn, or floss, plus a pen and a ruler.

Cut a piece about a few inches long.
Wrap it around the base of your finger.
Mark where the end of the string overlaps with the rest.
Lay the string flat and use a ruler to measure the length between the end and your mark in millimetres.
Use the Ring Size Conversion Chart to match the millimetre length to the corresponding ring size.

2. Print a Ring Sizer:

You’ll just need a printer, paper, and scissors.

Print our Printable Ring Sizer and chart at 100% on A4 paper.
Cut out the ring sizer and the slot as instructed.
Wrap it snugly around your finger.
Slip the pointed end through the slot.
The number that lines up is your ring size.

1. Measure an Existing Ring

you already have a ring that fits well, you can use the below ways to figure out your ring size. These methods are useful, but a jeweller’s tools and advice are always the most accurate. Whenever you can, bring the ring to us and we’ll measure it professionally with a ring gauge stick.

Choose a ring that fits the finger you want to measure.
Place it on top of a ruler and measure the widest inside edge to edge (diameter) in millimetres.
Round and get the nearest whole millimetre.
Use the inside diameter measurement to match our Ring Size Chart below.

2. Use a Printable Ring Size Chart

If you already have a ring that fits, you can use it to work out your size. Simply print our Ring Sizer Conversion Chart and match the inside edge of your ring to the guide

Print our Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart at 100% on A4 paper.
Choose a ring that fits the intended finger.
Place the ring over the printed size circles until the inside edge matches one exactly.
If the ring falls between two sizes, get in touch we can help with half sizes..

Quick Tips for Getting Your Ring Size Right

Pop in for a measure-up.

The easiest way to get it right is to visit us, and we’ll measure your size for you. At Autumn and May, we use professional sizing sticks and gauges for accuracy. You can drop by any time, no appointment needed and of course, it’s free of charge.

Temperature matters.

Fingers shrink when cold and swell when hot. Always measure at a normal body temperature. If your hands feel cold or hot, bring them back to normal by running them under room-temperature water. Avoid measuring when too cold or too hot, as the result could be up to half a size out.

Evening is best.

Fingers change size throughout the day with food, drink, and activity. The second half of the day or evening is the best time to measure for the most comfortable fit.

Think about the band style.

Wide rings feel tighter, while slim bands feel looser. As a guide, size up by half for chunky bands (over 4mm) and size down a touch for very slim bands (under 1.5mm). We use either “leading edge” or “centre” sizing when measuring on a stick at Autumn and May, we always use the “centre” method for consistency.

Measure the right hand.

Your dominant hand is usually slightly larger, so always measure the hand you plan to wear the ring on.

Don’t stress about it.

Guessing the Size? Start With the UK Average

Ring sizes are as individual as we are they can be influenced by height, build, and even dress size. There’s no perfect formula, but knowing the averages can be a handy starting point when choosing a ring, especially if you’re planning a surprise.

Women’s average ring size

For women in the UK, the average engagement and wedding ring size is L. Most women fall between sizes L or M, so if you’re unsure, this range is often a safe place to start.

Men’s average ring size

For men, the average UK ring size is T — about seven sizes larger than the women’s average. Most men will sit somewhere between T and V, depending on build.

A few things to keep in mind

Averages are just that — averages. The best way to know for sure is to measure properly. Come by, and speak to one of our member of staff.

What if I don’t know my partner’s ring size for their engagement ring? +

You’re not alone - many people don’t know this. You can borrow a ring they already wear or ask someone close to them for help. And if it’s not quite right, resizing is usually simple afterwards.

So how do we ‘guess’ people’s ring sizes? +

Most women’s sizes fall between L–N, and men’s between R–T. You can also consider dress size, height and build as a gentle guess-estimate guide. If unsure, it’s often best to choose slightly larger.

What if I don’t get the ring size right? +

That’s perfectly okay for most of our Engagement and Wedding Rings. Most rings can be resized after the proposal with ease. The moment matters far more than the initial fit.

How do I know if my ring fits right? +

A good fit should slide on easily and come off with a little resistance. It shouldn’t feel tight or spin too freely. A slight movement is completely normal.

Can rings be altered to any size? +

Most rings can be adjusted up or down by a few sizes. Some designs, like full eternity rings, may have limitations. We’re always happy to guide you if you’re unsure.

If my ring size is right but my ring twists around, what can I do? +

This is quite common, especially with certain thin shanked designs or if you may have a larger knuckle. Small adjustments like sizing beads can help keep it in place. A slight tweak usually makes all the difference.

How much does it cost to resize a ring? +

The cost depends on the design and how much adjustment is needed. Simple resizing is usually quite reasonable. Please contact us, we can always advise the price quote.

Do wider rings fit differently? +

Yes, wider bands tend to feel tighter than slimmer ones. You may need to go up slightly in size for a comfortable fit. It’s something to keep in mind when choosing your ring style.

Does finger size change throughout the day? +

Yes, it can change slightly with temperature, time of day, and even sporting/ exercise or other physical activity. Fingers tend to be a little larger in the evening and warmer weather. It’s best to measure when your hands are at a normal, comfortable temperature.
