What is Diamond Colour?

In gemmology, diamond colour refers to how colourless a white diamond appears. Most diamonds carry a delicate natural tint. During their formation, tiny trace elements become trapped within the crystal structure, creating subtle warmth, usually yellow or brown in hue. The purer the carbon crystal, the whiter the diamond appears.
This is not about fancy coloured diamonds (those stunning pinks and blues are graded differently). Here, we are talking about the gentle warmth that appears across most white diamonds.
What Causes Colour?
Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth under immense heat and pressure over billions of years. They are made of pure carbon, but during this extraordinary journey, trace elements can become trapped within the carbon crystal structure, creating natural colour.
Nitrogen introduces warm yellow or golden-brown tones - the more nitrogen present, the stronger the colour appears. Boron can create grey or brown undertones, or in rare cases, the captivating blue hues. Structural distortions within the crystal lattice create pink and red diamonds.
These are nature’s signatures on each diamond, carrying its own story of formation.
The Truly Colourless Diamonds?
They are extremely rare - less than 2% of all diamonds. The colourless diamonds are exceptionally pure carbon, untouched by trace elements during their billion-year formation.
Diamond Colour Scale
Colour is perspective. Diamond colour is precise grading.
Before the 1950s, describing diamond colour was confusing and inconsistent. Then the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the D ~ Z colour grading scale, which became the global standard. They intentionally began with D rather than A, to distinguish it from earlier, unreliable systems.
The scale runs from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown), with 23 carefully defined grades grouped into 5 main categories. A higher grade means less visible colour. Today, it is the universal language of diamond colour.
The Five Categories
D ~ F | Colourless: Icy white, brilliant, exceptionally rare. Premium pricing reflects genuine rarity.
G ~ J | Near Colourless: Appear colourless to the naked eye once set. Excellent value. This range represents 60% of all engagement ring purchases.
K~ M | Faint Colour: Noticeable warmth begins. Beautiful in yellow or rose gold settings. Significantly more affordable.
N ~ R | Very Light Colour: Light yellow or brown tint visible. Work best in yellow gold with vintage designs.
S ~ Z | Light Colour: Noticeable yellow or brown colour. Considerable price advantage. Beyond Z enters fancy colour territory.
How Colour Is Graded
Diamond colour is graded under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, including neutral lighting, a white background, and face-down evaluation to isolate body colour from sparkle. If a diamond falls between two grades, it is always awarded the lower grade. Independent laboratories such as GIA, IGI and HRD provide objective, internationally recognised certification.

Fancy Colours
Fancy Colour Diamonds: Vibrant & Rare
Fancy colour diamonds are an entirely different world, where colour isn't something to minimise. These diamonds display visible natural colour such as vibrant yellows, pink, rare blues, green or champagne. Fancy colour diamonds graded outside the standard D ~ Z scale. Here colour is the feature and graded using three factors: Hue (the colour itself), Tone (lightness or darkness) and Saturation (intensity of colour)
Only around 1 in 10,000 diamonds possess natural fancy colour. The stronger and purer the colour, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. Fancy yellow, pink and blue diamonds are among the most sought-after in the world. Autumn and May experts can source fancy coloured diamonds for bespoke commissions, both natural and lab-grown.
Very Light and Light colour diamond grades
At the coloured end of the standard scale, usually N ~ Z range, diamonds display a lovely warmth with soft golden or champagne tones that some buyers actively seek. These work beautifully in vintage-inspired designs and are especially well suited to yellow or rose gold settings, where the metal harmonises with the stone's colour. For those who appreciate a romantic, warm aesthetic over icy white, they offer both beauty and value.

What's the Best Colour Grade to Choose?
The answer isn't universal grade. The right choice depends on your ring style, setting and budget. G ~ H diamonds appear colourless to the naked eye in most settings, making them the sweet spot for many buyers. There is no single “best” colour.
- If you love crisp, icy brilliance, look towards D ~ F
- If you want excellent value with a white appearance, G ~ H is the sweet spot
- If you love romantic warmth, I ~ K can be beautiful
Carat Fact: Colour Is More Visible in Large Diamonds
As diamonds increase in size, body colour becomes more expressive and easier to see. More surface area and deeper pavilion mean colour becomes more visible. For example, a J colour might appear white in a 0.50ct stone but show warm colour in a 2ct diamond:

Does Fluorescence Matter?
