Clogau: A Timeless Legacy

The story of Clogau began in 1989 when founder William (Bill) Roberts discovered a gold mine in the beautiful Snowdonia mountains of North Wales. This was the Clogau St David’s mine in Bontddu. However, the heritage of Welsh Gold dates back much further in history. William decided to gamble on the idea that some undiscovered gold would still be buried within the mine. The Clogau St David’s gold mine was historically the largest and most productive gold mine in the Dolgellau area. Initially, the mine focused on extracting copper and small amounts of lead. However, during the gold rush of 1862, it shifted to gold production and remained a significant operation until 1911. Over this period, the mine processed 165,031 tons of gold ore, yielding 78,507 troy ounces (2,442 kg) of gold.

To make the best use of this precious gold, William used it exclusively to create jewellery of the very highest quality with Wales as his main design inspiration. Initially, in 1989, just five lines of jewellery were created. In 1992, Clogau officially launched its first Welsh Gold jewellery collection, featuring five exquisite designs inspired by the beauty and history of Wales. William and his wife Margaret spent many hours carefully designing these beautiful and collectable pieces, along with their full-time designers and craftsmen. Today, Clogau’s highly coveted creations continue to incorporate the rare Welsh Gold found in Snowdonia’s ancient mines.

Authentic Welsh Gold - The Gold of Royalty

Welsh Gold is the world’s rarest and most sought-after gold. The tradition of using Welsh gold in the wedding rings of the British Royal Family began in 1923. The Welsh gold story goes back over 100 years, when Prince Edward was invested as the Prince of Wales in 1911. The coronation regalia, known as the Honours of the Principality of Wales, were made from Welsh gold, identified by the Welsh dragon stamp. The regalia were used again in 1969 at Caernarfon for the investiture of Prince Charles.

The tradition of the British Royal Family using Welsh gold wedding rings was carried into its 95th year during the most recent royal wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on 19th May, 2018; some of the notable Royal Occasions are:

The tradition was founded in 1923 by Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, on her marriage to the Duke of York, later King George VI – The wedding ring was made from pure Welsh gold from the Clogau St David’s gold mine.
